•In case you missed yesterday’s news alert, E. & J. Gallo has purchased Denner Vineyards in a deal that includes the brand, tasting room and gravity-flow winery, plus 130 acres of vineyards in two of the most hailed subregions of Paso Robles: Willow Creek and Adelaida. The winery has been a leader in the region for its complex red Rhône- and Bordeaux-style wines. No purchase price was disclosed. Here’s the full story.
•Supermarket giant Albertsons has unveiled a new premium Vinaforé Collection. The private label wine range features a Napa Valley Chardonnay, Côtes du Rhône Villages, Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, and Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc, retailing between $15 and $22. The Vinaforé Collection is now available at Albertsons Cos. banner stores including Albertsons, Safeway, Shaw’s, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Acme, Tom Thumb, and United Supermarkets. It joins Signature Reserve, O Organics, and Kalyana wines in the retailer’s own brand portfolio.
•Destilería Serrallés’s Don Q rum brand is releasing a new limited edition, Double Aged Cognac Cask Finish. The newcomer is aged in American white oak barrels for five to eight years, then rested and finished for an additional two years in French oak Cognac casks. Retailing at $80 a 750-ml., Double Aged Cognac Cask Finish is the first of three Double Aged Cask Finish limited-edition rums that are scheduled to be launched by the Puerto Rico distillery by January 2023.
•Sazerac Co.’s Corazón Tequila is launching its Expresiones del Corazón 2022 Collection, featuring two limited-edition Añejo Tequilas. The collection highlights the partnership between Casa San Matías, said to be Mexico’s fourth-oldest Tequila distillery, and Buffalo Trace Distillery. This year’s collection includes Corazón Eagle Rare 17 Añejo Tequila, aged for 17 months in Eagle Rare 17-Year-Old bourbon barrels, and Corazón Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Añejo Tequila, which spent 19 months of aging in Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye Whiskey barrels. Both retail at $80.
•Mixed martial arts league UFC and Spirit of Gallo’s New Amsterdam Vodka have struck a multi-year national marketing partnership focused on the Wildcard brand, a vodka-based line of canned beverages and New Amsterdam Vodka’s first offering in the RTD category. Wildcard will become the Official Ready to Drink Vodka of UFC. Wildcard includes Original Hard Lemonade, Classic Hard Punch, and Lemon Hard Tea, selling in flavor-specific 4-packs at retailers nationwide for an SRP of $10.
•Breakthru Beverage Group has rolled out a new app to its sales consultants aimed at matching diverse supplier brands with customers who wish to support them. The new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) app is now being used across the company’s footprint. The company’s associates can search for a single criterion like “woman-owned,” or multiples like “Black woman-owned,” to sell relevant brands in their market. “The app has been very well received as the new portfolio segmentation helps serve the end consumer in a highly demanded way,” said Kevin Roberts, Breakthru’s EVP, supplier business development.
